Anteshti Puja

Antyeshti Puja is a sacred Hindu final rite performed to honour a departed loved one and complete the last of the traditional life-cycle Sanskaras. The word Antyeshti means “last sacrifice” or “final offering,” representing the completion of a person’s earthly journey and the family’s final act of love, respect and duty toward the departed soul.

The ceremony is performed according to Hindu traditions and family customs, with sacred mantras, prayers and prescribed rituals guided by a knowledgeable priest. These rites may include offerings, prayers for the departed, purification rituals and other ceremonies appropriate to the family’s tradition. The exact customs can vary according to region, community and religious practices.

In Hindu philosophy, the physical body is considered temporary, while the Atman, or soul, continues its spiritual journey. Antyeshti rituals reflect this belief and are performed with prayers for the peaceful onward journey of the departed soul. They also provide family members with a meaningful way to offer their final respects and fulfil important religious responsibilities.

Depending on tradition, additional rites may be observed in the days following the cremation, including Asthi Visarjan, Pind Daan, Tarpan, Shraddha or other ceremonies performed in remembrance of the departed and in honour of the ancestors.
